The Jurisprudence Tool

The Jurisprudence Tool has been developed by the College as an educational resource for Registered Opticians. The purpose of the Jurisprudence Tool is to help registrants acquire knowledge about the laws, standards, and guidelines that affect Opticianry in Ontario.

Chapter 1:

Professional Boundaries and Sexual Abuse Prevention [ En | Fr ]

The purpose of this module is to assist registrants in understanding the concepts of professional boundaries and their importance. The module helps registrants avoid crossing professional boundaries, including those related to sexual abuse, and to recognize how the College addresses them. 

Mandatory

Newly Registered Opticians
must complete the Professional Boundaries and Sexual Prevention within 12 months of registration with the College of Opticians of Ontario.
 
Current Registered Opticians

must complete Professional Boundaries and Sexual Abuse Prevention once every three years.

This module must be completed once every 3 years and can be used as a Professional Growth activity (#3782) the year in which it is completed.  Once completed, you can download a completion certificate.  To use as a professional growth hour, record the activity in the Quality Assurance Section of your Registrant Portal.  

Chapter 2:

Record Keeping, Confidentiality and Privacy [ En | Fr ]

The purpose of this module is to assist registrants in understanding the importance of record keeping, confidentiality and privacy. The module helps registrants develop practical skills for maintaining, using and disclosing patient records. 

Optional

Record Keeping Confidentiality and Privacy is an optional module. 
 

This module can be completed once every 3 years and can be used as a Professional Growth activity (#3783) the year in which it is completed.  Once completed, you can download a completion certificate.  To use as a professional growth hour, record the activity in the Quality Assurance Section of your Registrant Portal.  

Chapter 3:

Communications [ En | Fr ]

The purpose of this module is to assist registrants in understanding the various methods of effective communication and their importance. This module will also help registrants develop practical skills for ensuring effective communication and avoiding unhelpful communication.

Optional

Communications is an optional module.   

This module can be completed once every 3 years and  can be used as a Professional Growth activity (#3792) the year in which it is completed.  Once completed, you can download a completion certificate.  To use as a professional growth hour, record the activity in the Quality Assurance Section of your Registrant Portal.  

Chapter 4: 

Introduction to the RHPA [ En | Fr ]

The purpose of this module is to assist registrants in understanding how opticianry is regulated in Ontario, and includes information on the professional misconduct regulation, the patient relations program, and the public register.  This module will also help registrants understand the context in which the RHPA operates, outline the duties and authority of the College and what are some of the more significant duties imposed upon opticians. 

 Optional 

Introduction to the RHPA is an optional module. 

Registered opticians in good standing interested in seeking election on the College's Board of Director's are required to complete this module to be eligible to run for election.

This module can be completed once every 3 years and can be used as a Professional Growth activity (#3823) the year in which it is completed.  Once completed, you can download a completion certificate.  To use as a professional growth hour, record the activity in the Quality Assurance Section of your Registrant Portal.  

Chapter 5:

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion 

As healthcare providers, opticians have a professional responsibility to treat others with dignity and respect. This module is designed to help registrants learn the fundamentals of diversity, equity and inclusion, and why these concepts are important to the practice of opticianry in Ontario.
